Opinion Write-ups: Hannibal (TV Show 2013-2015)

Caleb Williford

I am writing my opinion write-up on the TV show Hannibal that aired from 2013-2015. The show is based on the idea of a crazy serial killer and cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, and based off of the series of movies and books that entail his story: Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hannibal Rising. I think the show puts a good more modern twist on the story and the whole idea of Hannibal. Apart from the movies that took place in the late 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, this series is modern and has cell phones, newer model cars, computers, and a lot of other aspects that add a spin to the story and separate it from the books and movies.

The series follows the story of William Graham, a criminal profiler who is also the protagonist in the Manhunter and Red Dragon movies. In this show, Will has a special gift that makes him an expert crime scene investigator and investigator to solve cases. He has the ability to investigate crime scenes and essentially turn back the clock in his head, reliving the crimes as though he was the criminal that committed the horrendous acts. The show goes into major detail about the serial killers and what they did to the people they killed, usually having them set up in elaborate, very gruesome poses and scenes. The story follows Graham as he investigates crime scenes, takes down multiple criminals and serial killers, and his hunt for the infamous “Chesapeake Ripper,” who from the original movies is none other than psychiatrist and friend to Graham, Hannibal Lecter. Will is faced with many challenges and the show goes more in depth about his struggles being an investigator and framed for murders.

I think that the series is a very good adaptation of the Hannibal Lecter story and I think that is very enjoyable. This show has just about everything in it and it could be put in multiple categories: horror, slasher, drama, mystery, and more. It is a great mixture of horror meets criminal minds mystery, having a balance of police investigation and mystery as well as gore and serial killers. To sum the review up, I think that Hannibal is a great show for someone to watch who wants to see a modern twist on a classic movie series, or just people that like to watch horror movies and see the various ways that Hannibal Lecter and his fellow killers dress their victims up.
